THE OLD SAILOR AND MARINE

THE OLD SAILOR AND MARINE

An old sailor and an old Marine were sitting at the

VFW arguing about who'd had the tougher career.

I did 30 years in the Corps," the Marine declared proudly,

"and fought in three of my country's wars.

Fresh out of boot camp

I hit the beach at Okinawa,  clawed my way up the blood soaked sand,

and eventually took out an entire enemy ma chine gun nest with a single

 grenade.

As a sergeant, I fought in Korea alongside General Mac Arthur.

We pushed back the enemy inch by bloody inch all the way up to the Chin-

ese border, always under a barrage of artillery and small  arms fire.

Finally as a gunny sergeant, I did three consecutive combat tours in Vietnam.

We humped through the mud and razor grass for 14 hours a day, plagued

by rain and mosquitoes, ducking under sniper fire all day and mortar fire at

night, when our guns were empty, we charged the enemy with bayonets!"

"Ahhh," said the

sailor with a dismissive wave of his hand ..

"Lucky bastard! All shore duty, huh

It's interesting to me the legs this joke has grown. I wrote it in 1997, while at COMNAVFORJAPAN in Yokosuka, Japan. I sent it to three shipmates to see what they thought of it, two first class petty officers and one Marine sergeant. The Marine didn't think it was funny, one Sailor thought it was OK and the other said it was hilarious. I guess the one that liked it must have forwarded it along, because a decade later it's all over the internet and I sometimes get it sent to me as spam on the email by people who have no idea I wrote it. I've even seen a version converted over to what looks like the Indian or Pakistani military, with a copyright on it to some middle eastern guy no less! Anyway, I'm glad folks like you like it enough to post it. My one little claim to fame, albeit anonymously eh?
